This piece of Belgian propaganda used in newspapers depicts the German entrance into Belgium as "The Rape of Belgium." Using something like rape in order to symbolize the atrocity not only makes the people in Belgium feel more shame and anger at what had happened, but it makes the countries on their side also feel anger and pity. It focused mostly on the way the country of Belgium must feel as a whole. This poster used exaggeration as well as pathos as well in order to make people treat the attack as something as morally wrong and disgusting as rape. The main idea like many other WWI propaganda is to make people want to fight against Germany. The picture shows a grotesque, dirty, brutal hand with the nation of Germany's symbol tattooed on it destroying the country of Belgium with little resistance. While the symbolism of the hand is obviously to make Germany look horrible and disgusting, it also makes it seem like Belgium is not capable of defending itself. While that does make the country feel bad about themselves and their military, it makes other want to take a stand and defend their fellow country in a fight for safety and peace. In my opinion this piece of propaganda was very effective because people were already angry at Germany for what they had done but making it seem so morally horrible and relating it to something many people hate and think of as inhumane encourages others to do something about it. Also, having it in newspapers that go around very quickly was a smart way to advertise this as opposed to posters only a few people might see on their way somewhere. With a newspaper, it is in their home and open to their family so it is a unavoidable subject they must think about.
